Summer Mission Part 2?

I just irritate the wack, leave them so confused
When I'm checkin on the mic with the ones and twos
Sneak you a peek of the drunk technique
Can't stand up, need to take a seat...

We are fast approaching the unofficial start of Summer, Memorial Day. For the handful of you who remember...let me rephrase that, for the couple of you that remember, it was last Memorial Day when the Slushy Gutter Summer’s Summer Mission officially started. The concept was simple: drink 528 beers during the 2006 Summer (between Memorial Day and Labor Day.)

The Commish finished the challenge with about 64 hours to spare, and now with the Summer of 2007 looming, the question is “will that ahole do that stupid sh*t again?” As of now, I’m not really sure. Last year was fun, but damn, that was a lot of beer. Do the math and it was about 37 beers a week. My liver is shivering in the corner at the memories. Like any decision, I’ve compiled the PROS and CONS of repeating of even upping the ante of a possible Slushy Gutter Summer Mission: The Sequel.

CONS: Pianos lodged on my head (better known as hangovers), my penis might turn orange, I might burn down Andre Rison’s house, entire paycheck spent by 5:20pm Friday on shots, simple act of walking becomes cumbersome, I could share a burger with David Hasselhoff, skin becomes shade of a Coors Light can’s silver, no one likes vomit in their 4th of July potato salad, storing beer in Coors Field humidor might be construed as trespassing, any blog entry that includes “and after I banged the gorilla” is not good, summer festivals at which the kids think I’m a clown does not reflect well, mysteriously ending up in Mike Vick’s backyard holding a pitbull, appear in a 50 Cent diss video in my boxer shorts, I might fight Dan O’Dowd, I’ll record a track called “Drankin” under the name ‘Young Mish,’ stank breath causes small children to pass out, Willie Nelson won’t return my calls, and I might end up forgetting to wear underwear and having the paparrazzi take photos.

PROS: Beer is good.

Damn, it's neck and neck, a definite tough decision. What do you think?

Here We Are

Many people tell me this style is terrific
It is kind of different, but let's get specific...

Before Ronald Reagan introduced crack to the ghettoes, he said "it's morning again in America." That's what we are thinking here at Slushy Gutter Summer. With the actual summer season winding down, today is the beginning of a new era, a new time, maybe a new legacy. That is, football season here in God's Country, aka Colorado. Mere hours away from kickoff in quirky Boulder, SG Summer takes a turn like the downward temperatures, the changing leaves, and weekends of footballs from Friday to Monday Night. SG Summer embraces football like it's own newborn child, a gift to the masses yet something that can be so personal. The Black and Gold of a proud alma mater; the Orange Pride of a great franchise; the innocence of the local 11. Whatever it is, football runs through the fabric of my life. Trips to old Mile High Stadium with my favorite football hero, my Pops, started the passion that is all pigskin. I took the reins from there, Monday Nights with Al and Dan, fantasy football with Dieter Brock, and lastly, the pagentry that is College Football.

With that, I've made the decision that Slushy Gutter Summer will continue. The 14 week "social experiment" will forge on. Yes, the challenge has been completed, but there is still more to say. This football addiction will be talked about, the utter realness of hip hop will be promoted, and even more of the sweet nectar of beers will be noted. Again, they all run through the fabric of my life.

The journey that has been the initial SG Slushy Summer ends in just a few hours. 528 beers. Cliche in hand, I can say "been there, done that." Looking back, what fun it was. Stupid, self-promoting, perhaps even dangerous? Of course. Fun, all-encompassing of the crazy crew, and laid back? Definitely. I raise a tall can, clink with everyone's glass, bottle or can, salutations to all. Cheers and peace, and we're just getting started...(528)

Who Dey?!

You better recognize, adjust your bifocals
Your style is local, I sit on beats in Acupulco
I put words together like Peter Jennings
And skate on motherfuckers like Peggy Fleming...

With less than 48 hours remaining until the glorious dawning known as College Football, Slushy Gutter Summer takes a quick look at the tilt between the hometown Buffs and their Game One opponent, the Montana State Bobcats.

-This will be the first game for new Colorado head coach Dan Hawkins. Hawkins currently holds the Div 1 winning percentage title after his stint as HC of the Boise State Broncos. 'Hawk' isn't quite in awe of his new Big 12 surroundings. "Is it fun going to all these (new) stadiums and all these places? Yeah," Hawkins said. "But it's not like I'm going to Norman to get Bob Stoops' autograph. We're going there trying to win. "- Dan Hawkins

-Montana State Football website

-MSU recently added safety Tyrone Henderson to their roster. Sound familiar? It should, as he started the majority of last year for the Buffs. He was kicked off the team for unspecified reasons earlier in the summer

-Colorado Buffaloes Roster

-Quarterback James Cox, a fifth year Senior will lead the Buffs into action on Satruday. Behind him on the depth chart are Juniors Brian White and Bernard Jackson. I expect to see all three play at some point during the year. At tailback, Hugh Charles should get the bulk of the carries, but he is hearing footsteps on the depth chart from The Welder.

-Colorado is one of nine Division 1A teams to never have played a D1AA opponent. That streak will end on Saturday when the Bobcats come to town. In this economic environment and with the NCAA 12th game, CU AD Mike Bohn was smart in bringing in the 'Cats. Would the fans rather see, say, Stanford or Minnesota? Sure, but the 'Cats fit the bill as a good first opponent.

-With MSU being a D1AA team, there is no line on the game. Various publications have their lines however. The Harmon Forecast has the score Colorado-41, Montana St-3.

-There will plenty of suds consumed before, during, and after the game. The prime spot, as it has been throughout the years is The Harvest House. Everyone come by to revel in the post-528 moments.

Inside the Numbers

I came to bring the pain hardcore from the brain
Let's go inside my astral plane

528: Daze in a Weak

No jokin, I'm gettin paid fully
You wanna buy the cassette, stop by Sam Goody
Yo where's my hoody?
I wanna be hard and cause some ruckus
Talk with the b-boy slang and blast some suckers...

The SG Summer is coming entering the two-minute drill, as we embark on the 14th and final week. Not one to slow down, the final seven days will undoubtedly provide some fast and hectic action...

-The Rockies cling to a faint hope of a successful season with the NL's best team heading into 20th and Blake...The Broncos, fresh off a preseason win, must cut players to get closer to the final roster...Fantasy Football, suicide pools, pick ems, they all get rolling hard this week...and College Football, the glorious game that it is, gets kicked off, including the Colorado Buffaloes with their new coach, new QB, and new outlook in the stout Big 12 Conference.

-Hip Hop sees a flurry of new releases from the old old school, the "alternative" group, a Wu fixture, and the "new" rap bullshit. The CDs will give many of us an indication of where the fickle hip hop audience's attention is in Fall of the 06.

-528 Update: This past weekend was slow, we're talking grandma walker slow for the Slushy Gutter Summer. A total of 6 beers counted against the final tally this weekend. That's not a misprint, the Kid took it mad easy. Kind of like resting your starters before the big game, as now, I am 100% focused on Labor Day weekend and getting over the heralded count. Now, Im fiending like Pookie for some smooooooooooooth CL, especially number 528, still scheduled for this Saturday am for Kickoff Saturday. This week we'll break down the 528 count, what it was, what it is, and where it is going... (519)

Glory Glory

I talk sense condensed into the form of a poem
full of knowledge from my toes to the top of my dome
I'm kinda young, but my tongue speaks maturity
I'm not a child, I don't need nothin for security...

A few tidbits as we approach the one week mark until the glorious day that signifies the start of the college football season and our beloved Golden Buffaloes:

-Coach Hawkins named senior James Cox the starting QB this past week, rustling the feathers of some of the Buff Nation. Yes, Cox has been a average backup the past two years, and yes, he had a subpar Champs Bowl. But the way some Buff backers are acting, it's like Hawk selected Cox over John Elway, Otto Graham, and a cyborg mix of the Deep Blue computer and Joe Montana.

-Runningback Mel Holliday (no relation to Rockies slugger Matt Holiday) is working his way up the depth chart with his bruising style of running the football. Holliday is an interesting story; as he has five kids, lives in nebraska, and spent the summer as a welder to support his family. Thus, "The Welder" is born.

-Everyone knows there's no love lost between the sodbusters and Buff fans. Most of our neighbors to the East are good, respectable people. Like any fans, they have their lunatic fringe, it just seems like the Fusker fan lunatic fringe is a whole lot bigger than most other schools. Case in point right here.

-Former Slushy Gutter winner JL Smooth has been a frequent viewer of ESPN's "Summer House" in which six future D1 players go all "Real World" and compete versus one another. One of the players is no other than CU's frosh QB Cody Hawkins. JL was also quick to point out the resemblance of Cody Hawkins and tormenting big brother Wayne from "The Wonder Years." No word if Paul Pfifer will be playing wideout.

528 Update: Top Billings

I get money, money I got
Stunts call me honey if they feel real hot...

This past weekend saw our yearly trip to Top Billings, Montana to visit with the in-laws and saturate ourselves in Montana suds and fun. A quick trip was smattered with many beers throughout the Montana Fair, a Billings Mustangs baseball game, and a day on the vast Big Horn Reservoir. Of course, we visited many local watering holes, and with less than two weeks remaining in Slushy Gutter Summer, the Kid is a mere 15 beers away from the hallowed mark. We are still looking at the early morning beer as number 528 on Kickoff Saturday, Sept 2, but it could come even earlier. (513)

The Quiet Storm- 528 Update

I'm not an MC who talkin all that junk
About who can beat who, soundin' like a punk
I just get down and I go for mine
Say check one-two, and run down the line

528 Update: A quiet weekend saw the count inch even closer to the ultimate goal. Some CF, a little BBQ, and a Sunday Rockies’ game got the Kid up to 469. That’s a mere 59 away. So the question now is not if, but rather when will the “Golden Brew” be swilled. Looking at the calendar and schedule, barring some unforeseen bender, my best guess is that #528 will occur the morning of Sept 2, before the kickoff of the first CU game. Ahhhh, the taste of a smooooooooth CL in the morning...stay tuned...Cheers!

528 Detox? Hardly.

Backspins for backspin, even while I'm rappin
Before I had a record, I always kept em clappin
Freestylin on the block, now I Chief Rock...

This weekend was to be a "slow" weekend in the SG Summer, but as events unfolded, it became a typical weekend. A 30th birfday party for my man Face on Saturday got things started on the proper. Sunday saw the Kid check out the Goats and their football tourney, then a reunion with a long lost relative who peppered us with marvelous stories of years past. Including one of a far-off relative back in the day who threw a disgruntled patron through a plate glass window of the local watering hole. Slushy Gutter indeed. (443)

Today is a great day here in CO, as football is in full swing. Our beloved Buffaloes start camp today, in what will hopefully end in December or January with a stellar year. An interesting article from the DP shows the CU coaching staff using a video game to help improve the QB play. Hmmm, CU football, video games? Throw in some smooooooooooth CLs and they can chill with the derelicts in our crew.

Up in da Mountains - 528

The year everybody start to rush,
Swingin through is your friendly neighborhood lush...

This weekend saw our annual sojourn to Glenwood Springs, and the added liver cruelety that comes with it. The 100 degree plus days were tempered by ice cold Coronas at the historic Hot Springs pool, smooooooooooooth CLs at the outdoor bar at the Hotel Colorado, wheat beers with some spicy Cajun fare while celebrating former two-time Slushy Gutter winner T-Dub's birfday, BLs and Dos XX cervezas with the hippies in downtown Carbondale, and a smattering of other random dranks and seedy bars around town. All in all, a great extended weekend, which sent off July's stanza of The Slushy Gutter Summer at a stellar 409. August stikes next...

Turntables Might Wobble...

I alleviated the pain, with a long-term goal
Took my underground loot, without the gold
You sold platinum round the world, I sold wood in the hood
But when I'm in the street, then shit it's all good...

*Word from Las Vegas and the Team USA training camp is that Carmelo Anthony has been the top performer in the camp. Some pleaded for Melo to work on his game this summer, so apparently, Melo is a dedicated reader of SG Summer. Trim, focused, and his shots falling, Melo should make the trip to Japan for the World Championships in August. Just a few weeks ago, he was considered an outside shot to make the squad. No word on who has fared the best at the blackjack tables during camp.

*Our fair town is abuzz as usual late in July. For once I wish it could be for a Rockies’ pennant chase, but the buzz is reserved for the daily yawn that is Broncos training camp. Extended sports reports, daily newspaper stories, snippets on the free agent punter who once survived a bear attack all consume the local media. Stay tuned to the ten o’clock news to see what Ron Dayne thinks about Tom Cruise’s baby.

*The Kid had a chance to check out the DMC DJ Championships this past weekend in Boulder. Eight DJs, whittled down from quite a few more, competed for a spot to rep CO in the national finals. My pick, DJ Cisco Rockwell, handily beat the field to claim the title. His scratches were precise, beats blended flawlessly, and music selection was a bit above average (my biggest complaint for the entire comp was that the DJs used beats more suited for a rave rather than some hardcore hip hop shit.)

*My man JL Smooth, a former Slushy Gutter winner, sent me a list of college football’s all time best players by number. A couple of Buffs, Eric “Public” Bienemy and former Supreme Court Justice Byron “Whizzer” White both received mention. Bienemy played a solid 9 years in the NFL, and played in the Super Bowl for the San Diego Chargers in 1995. Yes, the Chargers did make the Super Bowl. White was a JFK appointee to the court who was a key player in the court’s civil rights activity of the 1960s. He served for nearly 30 years.

[528 Update. A steady weekend of hip hop shows and CF playing helped push the count up to a respectable 356. I scarfed down smoooooooooth CLs after both shows only served the dreaded BL and even a stale tasting PBRs. As we head into July's last weekend, the liver is scared and shivering about the prospect of August.]

Enta Tha Stage- 528 Update

Maybe years if my peers give me ears to fill
Lick off a shot and act ill, parlay and chill
See I paid my dues, now you can't tell me nothing
This is dedicated to the ones who kept fronting...

A quick 528 Update, which was raised a smidgeon with some mid-week imbibing, a rarity in the Slushy Gutter Summer. Tuesday with the release of EA College Football 2007, former two time Slushy Gutter winner T-Dub had the crew over, including SR and Spotwood aka B-Rabbit, for a few pops while we dissected the intricacies of the new treat. The following night was two time Slushy Gutter winner JayBiz and Mrs Biz's birfdays, which resulted in more swilling. A good start to the weekend which will include the Boulder Boot Camp Click show and probably a few more to the 528 count. Stay tuned for a BCC review... (319)

All-Star Break

You know you got the mad fat fluid when you rhyme, it's halftime...

***The local nine suffered their eighth straight defeat last night, pushing them 5 back and 4 games under 500. Just a scant 10 days ago, they were in first place and dreams of a possible postseason at 20th and Blake didn't seem so far-fetched. That was before the bullpen became imploded and the offense scored less than Tara Reid's frequent shopper card at Liquor Mart. The front office has already begun to reconstruct the has-beens and never-weres in the bully, and we may see a few other moves to get back in the less than stellar NL West before the deadline.

***Forgive me if I'm not scheduling my trip to Miami or Detriot for next year's NBA Finals for my Denver Nuggets. The trade for JR Smith isn't like were bringing in Manu Ginolbli or Michael Redd, or even Flip Murray at the #2 spot. Have the Nuggets had a viable off-guard since TR Dunn's jheri curl roamed Big Mac? (With apologies to Bryant Stith.) Smith, only two years removed from HS, has the "potential" tag all over him. Sort of like DeMarr Johnson still does five years into his "potential."

***Don't call me a "conspiracy guy," but it seems the deck is being more and more stacked against Ricardo Patton and his last year as head CU hoops coach. No contract beyond 07, recruits being denied admission, a tougher schedule, and a University review, have Ricardo shaping up his resume for beyond Boulder next summer. If Black Belt Ricardo can even get this team to the NIT, there should be a parade down Pearl Street for him. Unfortunately, it looks like the only letters the Buffs cagers will see will be DIA after another first round Big 12 loss.

[528 UPDATE: We are officially in the 2nd half of the Slushy Gutter Summer. The 3-digit weather made the Kid thirstier than a llama and was perfect for cold drinks. The weekend got the count way up after a visit to a bikini contest with former Slushy Gutter winner JL Smooth. Yes, a bikini contest. We weren't in a 1983 Spring Break movie either. We did enjoy a few smooooooooooth CLs and had an interesting time. The weekend moved along with a few pops at a trivia contest and a few deadbeat bars. Sunday a few CLs were downed at a 2 year old's birthday party. It was there I was chastised by the wife for talking about "cooking up crack rock" within the party's confines. Nevertheless, we got over the 300 mark and after coach's halftime pep-talk, we're ready for the 2nd half. (311) ]

Heads Aint Ready

Lemonade was a popular drink and it still is,
I get more props and stunts then Bruce Willis...

The count is over the hump as we approach the midway mark of The Slushy Gutter Summer. The past week has seen a steady diet of pops, from two softball losses, and a rained out Rockies game (only to be resumed at 11:00pm when I was tucked away in dreamland.) I visited the historic Rock Rest Lounge with the beautiful wife and checked the World Cup Final and the head-butt heard ‘round the world last Sunday at The Exchange Tavern. Throw in a free park reggae show and the Cannibal Ox show and the count is past the “point of no return” at svelte 275 and the dog days of summer are here.

300 Game

I get in shape and do my physical fitness
Your head's numb, so your brains a miss this...

The “extended” weekend kept up the furious pace of the Slushy Gutter Summer. Ample opps to down beers and chill with my lovely wife and some of the crew. An evening stroll along Boulder’s Pearl Street Mall provided a few libations and always interesting people watching. Broz’s wedding saw a few drunkards in full wedding tipsy regalia, including former Slushy Gutter winner T-Dub. A jaunt through Cherry Creek’s Art Festival saw the first Canadian beer, a LaBatt’s Blue, of the Slushy Gutter Summer, eh? A mini-version of the Broomfield Trash Bar Beer Tour saw the kid and Slushy Gutter winner JayBiz down a few soldiers, including a couple monster mugs at Red’s Pub, a stale beer at Roosters, and the enemy’s new “Select” beer at Fox and Hound. Independence Day saw a few smoooooooooooooth CLs end the festivities and head us into the Meat of the Summer at a staunch 228, a “mere” 300 away from the golden goal.

Lose Yourself

Energy is felt once the cards are dealt
With the impact of roundhouse kicks from black belts
that attack, the mic-fones like cyclones or typhoon
I represent from midnight to high noon...

Who was rocking the new I-Pod this past weekend, staring intently into the gray skies, not hearing the cheers and taunts of a raucous crowd, amping himself up for a pressure-filled game/match/battle?

  1. Terrell Owens going out on a broken foot in the Super Bowl
  2. A steely Patrick Roy before Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals
  3. Stef and the rest of the Ampipe High Bulldogs getting pumped to play those freakin bastards from Walnut Heights
  4. B-Rabbit, Future, and Cheddar Bob chillin backstage before the big showdown with Papa Doc and the Leaders of the Free World
  5. Spotwood before the finals of the glorified BBQ backgammon final

If you answered #5, you, sir, are correct! Spotty went all 8 Mile on us and repped the IPod for a couple hours while pyching himself up for the always intense 26th Blowfish Backgammon Final. He took it even a step further, when he played the Final with the IPod blasting, along the way slurping down Fat Tires like the shit was lemondae on a hot day. Must've worked, because homeboy won his first title, dispatching the kid 2-1 along the way with some fancy roles and elusive play.

Former Slushy Gutter winner Juck also repped, along with former two-time Slushy Gutter winner T-Dub, E-Train and fam, and a host of others.

[528 UPDATE: The weekend also brought ample opportunity to add to the Slushy Gutter Summer, including a visit from the in-laws in from Top Billings. After the visit, including the aforementioned Rox game, a mountain respite, and a nice Italian dinner, the total rested at a smoooooooooooth 181 heading down the June stretch.]

Organized Confusion

Total chaos -- no mass confusion,
Rhymes so hypnotizing known to cause an illusion...

***Oakland A's manager Ken Macha as a young boy: "My controller's broke! This game cheats!"
Oakland A's manager Ken Macha after losing 2 of 3 to the Rox: "This humidor is bad! This stadium cheats!"

***Avalanche goalie Jose Theodore has been spotted in Canada with Paris Hilton. Guess that gives new meaning to the term "scoring right through the five-hole." Paris has run through NFLer Brian Urlacher, Heisman winner Matt Leinart, and now Theodore. Maybe if Paris' fancy ever turns to say, Lance Berkman, hordes of bad comics and bloggers can shout, "she certainly has had her fair share of different sticks and balls." Damn, that was bad, I'm sorry.

***Snitches. Egos. Thugs. Posses. Chossing your "general." Smart ass style. Divisive groups. Must be talking about The Sopranos? No, that would be your 2005-2006 Nuggets. DP writer Thomas George delved deep into the past season and came up with the realness that went on with the team. A three part series that showed the colorful cast of characters that reside in the Pepsi Center. Part One. Part Two. Part Three.

[528 UPDATE: The week has been fast and frentic, starting with a trip to Renaissance Festival where we had quite a few smoooooooth CLs while devouring pickles, turkey legs, and steak on-a-stick. Former Slushy Gutter winners T-Dub and JayBiz also downed a few with the kid, including some freebie samples. Adding to the total was a few celebrating SR's 30th bday, the previously mentioned Rox game, a Father's Day lunch, and a few beers with former Slushy Gutter winner Juck at the local bar D-Note to bring the total up to a gross plus(148)

528 Update - Salute This Muthfucka!

Okay here I go shorty tap the 40-o smash
To a pass if ya crash make a dash to the trash
Tap a cap, have alot and not alot, not a little
Don't grade upon the label take a guzzle, don't dribble

Wednesday night went to Elway’s with other drunks, errrrrrrrrrr…co-workers, and enjoyed a lavish spread and John Elway was our waiter! Had a few smooooooooooooth CL on the back deck after the meal and watched Denver’s collagen and silicon over-40 set get their proper swerve on. Thursday, the local softball squad broke the recent losing streak. Of course, that was dictated by the fact the other team didn’t have enough players and were forced to forfeit. That gave us ample extra time to enjoy a few icy cold ones in the elementary school parking lot, being the great role models we are. On hand were current Slushy Gutter winner Pickles, two-time Slushy Gutter winner T Dub, two-time Slushy Gutter winner JayBiz, and original Slushy Gutter winner Shanny, among a host of other imbibers. Act A Fool

Bass, to make your heart shiver, I know you remember back when I used to wear silver, but I gave it a toss, cause I was told that you're not a real b-boy without real gold...

This weekend I was listening to The Liks newest CD on the trusty iPod, when I heard a great line on the track "Over Here." King Tee makes an appearance and spits:

I drove in with a few rowdy friends, new body Benz, King Jaffe ends, my rims don't spin

Pretty clever line since I hadn't heard of James Earl Jones' King Jaffe from "Coming To America" in a few years. 1988 in full effect in this modern classic, with some unforgettable lines, characters, and scenes. Who can forget Soul Glo, the Barbershop cats, Zamunda, Sexual chocolate, MacDougals restaurant...classic.

King Tee can still bring it too. Guys been dropping CDs for almost 20 years. Act A Fool and Tha Triflin Album were off the chain. He was gansta without being a hardcore thug and his metaphors and flow were way above par. At the time, he corralled the hottest West Coast producers and DJs to put in work. They sampled everyone from James Brown to the Rolling Stones to help King Tee weave a SoCal aesthetic that even had hedz in the suburbs imagining a roll down Crenshaw. And he put up Tha Liks, which in turn dropped Xzibit and the Likwit Crew. Big ups to King Tee, he could be considered a West Coast pioneer who has never really got his full due.

[528 Update: Had our annual trivia party this weekend, and although it wasn't as rowdy as years past, it was a drinking and rollicking good time. Had a few smoooooooooooooth CLs with the crew well past midnight. Current Slushy Gutter winner D-Nic, former Slushy Gutter winner Juck, the future Mrs. Broz, and Thorpedo took the winning honors. Sunday went back to Coors Field and had a few more CLs and watched Brian Fuentes blow the freaking game as the Rox stayed in last place. (92)]
